WHAT'S THE BEE ABOUT?

The Executive Spelling Bee is a new annual community event which brings together friends and supporters of the Literacy Council of LaPorte County for an old fashioned spelling bee - with a few added twists for fun. Teams of three adults compete for prizes and recognition. While the spelling competition is as fierce as any traditional spelling bee, the rest is pure fun and laughter.

The Executive Spelling Bee allows for one practice round, to familiarize all teams with the process, before official spelling rounds begin. The Bee uses official Scripps Howard National Spelling Bee words, rules, and pronouncer guides. The teams of three-to-four individuals are given a short amount of time to confer and agree on the spelling for their word, before spelling it for the judges. Typically, four or five rounds of progressively difficult words produces the final first and second place winners.

The goal of this special event is to promote awareness of literacy in our county, where more than half of our residents read at the lowest levels, as well as to support the collaborative work of the Council.

This will be a high profile event, strongly supported by local Chambers of Commerce, city governments, libraries and other community leaders. If you are interested in being a sponsor of the Bee, please contact Judy Hanish at 219/326-6260 or via email at info@lpliteracycouncil.com.
